A meeting was held on March 12, 2024 in the premises of the OIF Representation in Geneva with several members of the UN Consultative Body on Artificial Intelligence (AI), accompanied by the Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Technology.
The risks presented by artificial intelligence on human rights, the worsening of the digital divide, the effects of the development of AI in a context of energy crisis or the preservation of cultural and linguistic diversity, these were the priorities put forward by the participants in this event: more than 35 French-speaking ambassadors and experts stationed in Geneva and around thirty online participants based in New York, Addis Ababa or Paris.
This meeting, the only one held in French during the mission to Geneva of the members of this Consultative Body, was a great success, demonstrating the interest of all diplomatic missions in issues related to artificial intelligence, while intergovernmental negotiations on the draft report, which will contribute to the Future Summit next September in New York, will begin in the coming days.
This interim report from the Consultative Body considered at length the question of the risks or inclusiveness of AI. The French-speaking diplomatic community has indicated its availability to help the Body operationalize certain principles and address more precisely the central issue of cultural and linguistic diversity, the foundation of universality and inclusiveness.
At the end of rich debates, the representative of the OIF to the UN in Geneva, Mr. Henri Monceau, concluded the meeting by confirming the continuation of the OIF’s commitment to French-speaking delegations throughout the process. . Several awareness-raising and capacity-building sessions are planned, notably in New York, between now and September.
