In partnership with the OIF and the Simon Institute for Longterm Governance, the Permanent Mission of Canada to the United Nations organized a workshop in French on artificial intelligence (AI) on April 25, 2024 for the benefit of French-speaking diplomats involved in the negotiations. of the Global Digital Compact. This training session aimed to improve the target audience’s knowledge of both the basics of AI and its societal, political, economic and cultural implications. Interactive sessions with invited experts provided in-depth insight into issues related to data governance and the specific characteristics of emerging AI governance, in light of the architecture proposed by the UN and proven experiences on the African continent. The Office of the UN Secretary-General’s Technology Envoy and Equiano Institute provided insightful insights. This French-speaking meeting has a double importance on the eve of the intergovernmental negotiations of the Global Digital Compact. It makes it possible to correct the initial inequalities between delegations located at different stages of appropriation of the issues covered by AI and the challenges it poses in terms of governance. The workshop also offers a unique moment of dialogue between French-speaking Permanent Missions, thus making it possible to further explore the path of the digital Francophonie on the path towards the Global Digital Pact.
